Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mass. Bay
serves volunteers and children in 150 communities from Cape Cod to Cape
Ann. Based upon our success offering brief presentations to softball and
basketball teams, I’m so grateful that you’re willing to allow
us to attend games to offer teams a quick introduction to Big Brothers
Big Sisters volunteer opportunities.
It’s a simple idea: children and adults benefit from little moments
of “every day” friendships. So, on almost every team we meet,
someone will know a child who could benefit, and a few will request more
info about volunteer options close to home or their office. We’re
simply looking to make it easy for individuals to get answers and participate.
It could be a few minutes with each team, but we’ve had the greatest
success when we have the league’s endorsement and permission.
Each Big Brothers Big Sisters match is based upon the common hobbies,
life experience and geography. Matches enjoy every day activities, a meal
or just hang out together – they decide. Independent studies found
these one-to-one friendships help “Littles” become more confident,
resilient, respectful of adults, AND more likely to avoid drugs, alcohol
and violence. We provide volunteers with options and advice for the duration,
so that matches can look forward to more tickets and events, and our partners
can be confident that we are offering a win-win option that builds communities
and team spirit.
